The fragility of marble: Margraf and Hannes Peer challenge the material at Milan Design Week

For Milan Design Week 2025, Margraf presents CRASH, an installation by Hannes Peer Architecture that radically transforms perceptions of marble, turning it from a symbol of stability into a metaphor for transformation. Located at Spazio BIG Santa Marta in the heart of Milan’s 5VIE district, the work explores collision as a creative force, where each fracture becomes a liberating gesture.

In this project, marble bends, twists, and crumbles, defying its timeless nature. Traditionally seen as immutable, the material becomes a living organism that breaks the rigidity of its conventional forms. The installation guides visitors through an environment reminiscent of a quarry, where marble slabs detach from walls and slide onto the floor, culminating in a suspended “crash” moment, a monumental slab defying the very laws of its existence.

CRASH draws inspiration from experimental artists like Michelangelo, Luciano Fabro, and Isamu Noguchi, who embraced fracture and error as spaces for creativity and revelation. Hannes Peer continues this tradition, celebrating imperfection as a creative act, where destruction becomes transformation.

The collaboration between Margraf, a historic company with over a century of expertise in marble, and Hannes Peer Architecture, a Milan-based studio known for its conceptual and multidisciplinary approach, blends innovation with craftsmanship. The result is a dialogue between solidity and unpredictability, tradition and disruption.

Scheduled from April 7 to 13, with a press preview on April 6 and a cocktail event on April 9, CRASH invites a reconsideration of marble—not as static matter, but as the expression of an evolving creative process. Through its fractures, the installation narrates a story of fragile yet powerful beauty, a metaphor for the human condition and the tension between permanence and change.

With quarries in Italy and Slovenia and a century-long tradition in handling precious materials, Margraf continues to innovate sustainably and culturally, collaborating with architects and artists to redefine marble’s potential.

With CRASH, Margraf and Hannes Peer deliver a manifesto of rupture and rebirth, where each mark on marble becomes a memory of impact, a collision generating new forms of beauty.
